Athlete Health Screening

The prevalence of a range of undiagnosed health conditions for athletes is high. For example, up to 90% of athletes with asthma, and 20% of non-asthmatics suffer from exercise induce bronchoconstriction (EIB) known as a transient airway narrowing occurring during and after physical exertion (Gerow & Bruner, 2023). Further examples include atrial fibrillation in middle-age and veteran endurance athletes. Although there are significant graded benefits for reducing cardiovascular risk and mortality, strenuous  prolonged exercise may predispose athletes to atrial and ventricular arrhythmias (Sanchis-Gomar et al, 2017). This Athlete Health Screen offers an assessment of respiratory function, detection of resting atrial and ventricular  fibriliation, blood pressures, BMI calculation, and Hip-to-Waist Ratio. A report will be generated for assessment by your GP with any abnormal findings.

Test details

Prior to starting any tests there will be a short consultation to discuss your health history and any concerns you might have.

Following a quiet period of rest we will assess your blood pressure and heart rhythm using a 6-Lead ECG to assess. This will be followed by an assessment of your respiratory function, and body composition (BMI, Hip-to-Waist Ratio). Finally, using a small capillary sample of blood taken from a fingertip we will assess your lipid profile.

At the end of the assessment a report will be generated which you can use for monitoring, or as a platform to discuss any concerns with your GP.
