Lactate Threshold Testing
What is a lactate threshold test?
As an athlete you should undergo lactate threshold test to gain valuable insights into your physiological performance and optimize your training regimen. The lactate threshold represents the intensity at which lactic acid accumulates in your bloodstream, signalling a shift in your energy system from aerobic to anaerobic. This threshold is a key determinant of an athlete's endurance and can vary significantly among individuals. By determining your lactate threshold in our laboratory, you can tailor your training zones and intensity levels to improve endurance performance and delay the onset of fatigue. This personalized approach will enable you and your coach to design more effective training programs, enhance your overall performance and ensure peak conditioning occurs prior to competition. Research shows that an individual’s lactate threshold can vary dramatically with training status, and so using it as a scientific basis for monitoring progress and adjusting training variables to optimize athletic potential, makes it an essential tool for serious competitors in various sports.

Lactate Threshold Test
Cost
£139
Duration
1 to 1.5 hours
Test details
This test is usually conducted on a treadmill, bike or a rower but it can be adapted to suit most endurance athletes.
When you arrive at the laboratory you have an explination of the test. You will then be required to complete a health history and consent form and have a brief discussion about your current training regeime.

We will take a resting capillary blood sample from a finger tip before you complete a brief warm up. The test begins with you exercising at a low intensity (set based on your fitness) for 3 minutes. At the end of this 3 minutes we will assess the blood lactate concentration, heart rate, and rate of percieved exertion before increasing the intensity of the exercise for another 3 minutes. we repeat this process for sometime, until you surpass your lactate threshold. When this occurs the test is terminated.

Following a cool down, your data will be processed and fed back to you with plenty of time for you to ask questions.

What you get
1. Determination of lactate threshold 1
2. Determination of lactate threshold 2
3. Individualised heart rate training zones based on blood lactate profile
Test Re-Test Lactate Threshold Testing
Why should you re-test?
Following a period of training your lactate threshold will have improved. In order to tailor your training, you will need to reassess to adjust your training zones accurately.

We will take a resting capillary blood sample from a finger tip, and fit you with a gas analysis mask before you complete a brief warm up. When this occurs the intensity then increases in small but frequent jumps until volitional exhuastion.

Following a cool down, and a post 5 minute blood lactate sample, your data will be processed and fed back to you with plenty of time for you to ask questions.
What you get
1. Determination of lactate threshold 1
2. Determination of lactate threshold 2
3. Individualised heart rate training zones based on blood lactate profile
4. Assessment of lactate clearance and recovery.
5. Accurate VO2 max score reported in mL.kg.min and L.min.
6. Comparison of your VO2 max to athlete related normative data.
